SANDRO CANOVAS is an adobero and Sotol activist in the borderlands of West Texas & Northern Chihuahua.
Since early 2022, he has been a vocal opponent of the appropriation of Sotol in Texas. Spearheading the defense of the designation of Sotol that exists since 2002 for Chihuahua, Coahuila y Durango in Mexico. When not playing with mud for a living. He spends his time advocating and educating people about how the tradition and patrimony of Sotol is affected by the appropriation efforts and newer steps towards industrialization in Chihuahua. Sandro started his campaign to protect Sotol in Texas by pressuring Marfa Spirit Co to respect the DO as well to implement science based practices into their business model.
With his efforts to protect Sotol. On the spring of 2022 he brought to the attention of PROFEPA & SEMARNAT the government agencies that oversee the enforcement and protection of natural resources in Mexico the situation of large scale poaching of Sotol in Chihuahua.
